Chasing God's Heart

David was called, “A man after God’s own heart.” However, what does that really mean to chase after God’s heart? To be someone who chases His heart is someone who displays and partakes in the characteristics and nature of God’s heart. David was a king who put his trust in God and desired for God’s will to be established. Even when his enemies came against him, he sought the Lord first and trusted Him more than the number of men in his army or what he could see because he knew God’s heart. Though he was not perfect and still fell short of God’s glory, his overall heart was for God. This is why God’s heart is so important because out of it, you can know God on a whole deeper level which builds trust and relationship. You can know the deepest parts of His nature by chasing after His own heart because His heart is the root to all the fruits of the Spirit. God is like a fruitful tree that never runs out of fruits. He wants us to come to Him and pick the fruits from His tree, His heart. “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” – Proverbs 4:23. The heart is the root of all your fruits. If your heart is wrong, your actions, motives, intents, desires, words, and all your characteristics will be corrupted. To fix the fruit, first, fix the root. However, if your heart is set on the heart of God, then your actions, motives, intents, desires, and words will all be full of the love and nature of God. You will also begin to have the fruits of the Spirit displayed in your life rather than the works of the flesh. The heart of God is full of amazing and good things, but what does it mean to chase after His heart? “So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” – Acts 17:27. When you chase after something, it is something you want to possess. It is like chasing after gold, if you chase after the gold, you want to possess it and keep it. In the same manner, when you chase after God’s heart, you want to partake of and display inside of your own heart. His heart is really not far from us either. It is as close as simply turning to God and reaching for Him. That is how simple it is! Turning from the ways of this world towards the Lord and seeking Him so that you may reach out for Him. However, the world has a heart that is never within reach nor catchable. It will make you weary and burden you by causing you to chase and chase after something that you will never catch. It is like the wind. “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” – Ecclesiastes 1:14. The wind is something that never rests, nor does it have a destination. It is always moving at an ungraspable pace. It will cause those who chase it to stumble and fall so that they may be weary. Don’t chase after the world for the world will pass, but God endures forever, and He is right within your grasp; just reach for Him! How is God’s heart described? God’s heart cannot be described in a powerful sentence; it is something that has to be shown. How does God show His heart? Well, out of the heart the mouth speaks, and God spoke His never-failing Word. “…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” – Matthew 12:34. Out of God’s mouth He gave His Word and His heart is shown through it. Everything God has spoken is from His heart. Therefore, if He spoke you into this world, then you are an image that came from His very own heart that He spoke into existence. Jesus also says that your heart is where your treasure is. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21. That being said, you are a treasure of God because you came from His heart. His desire is that you will have a relationship with Him and know Him so that you will show His own heart and His loving nature to others that they may see and chase after God’s heart too. So overall, out of your heart, your mouth speaks. If you will simply be someone who desires and chases God’s heart, your actions and words will be of life rather than death. You will live a life full of the light of Christ even in the darkest places and the roughest storms. So, what is oozing out of your heart today? Is your heart set on the Lord’s heart or the never-ending wind? God wants to take your heart and fill it with His wonderful heart just as a farmer takes an empty basket and fills it with the ripe fruits.
