God's Gentle Voice Part 1

“Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” – 1 Kings 19:11-12. 

God’s voice is as a whisper, a gentle voice. There are many loud voices around us these days. From the flesh to the world, we are constantly being bombarded by so many noises and voices. However, we just have to shut those loud noises out so that we may hear the gentle whisper of God. So, why does God speak through a whisper? When someone whispers to you something, it is usually a secret. Secrets are usually deep and personal things about that person or someone else. Well, God speaks through a whisper because it is the secrets and mysteries of Him He is sharing with us. He shares these secrets of His depths and who He is with those He loves. These mysteries and secrets are loaded with revelation and the deep things of God that your spirit searches out. 

“But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of a man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:9-12.

Another reason God speaks through a whisper is because a soft-spoken voice is much more peaceful and comforting than a loud shout. God’s voice is like the eye within the storm. It contains a peace that surpasses all understanding. 

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7. 

The eye of the storm is the most peaceful part of the storm, yet it is surrounded by the strongest part of the storm. In the same manner, we can be surrounded by the strong winds and storms of this world, but God’s voice is the eye of the storm. It is peaceful and gentle with not a gust of wind. Though we may not understand how God’s voice can be so peaceful even within the strongest storms, if we just put our focus on God, we won’t be shaken by the winds. Look at when Jesus and Peter walked on the water. 

“And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.” – Matthew 13:28-32. 

When Peter first walked on water, his focus was on Jesus. However, the moment he saw the wind which would be the voices and noises of the world, he became afraid taking his focus off Jesus. Immediately he sank. If our focus is on God and not the concerns of the world, it will be much easier to listen to His soft voice. So, even in the storm, don’t take your focus off Jesus at the storm around you, but remember that His gentle voice is peace, not chaos. So overall, God whispers us the secrets about Him and who He is. He loves to share these secrets through His soft peaceful whisper. A gentle voice is always more peaceful than a loud voice. Even in the midst of the strongest storm, His voice is the peace within it.
