Rooted In Christ

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
– Colossians 2:6-7.
Roots are a vital part in your walk with the Lord. Roots are what hook into the ground giving a plant the ability to stand against storms and droughts. In the same way, roots are what hooks you into the foundation of Christ. In the parable of the four soils (Matthew 13:1-23), the four soils mentioned were the wayside, stony places, among the thorns, and the good ground. Without roots, you will be like the stony ground where you have received the seed with joy, but that seed will only spring up so far before dying because it has no roots to support it. In the same way, a person can receive the Word of God with joy and gladness, but the enemy will pluck that seed from a person because that person has no roots in Christ. So, how are roots developed? The key to a lush and green lawn is not watering it every day but giving it just enough water to make it through. The reason for this is that the plant is forced to grow deeper roots in search of water. So, when the droughts and heat come against the grass, it thrives being just as lush as always because the roots are deep still prospering in an abundance of water from below. In the same manner, when dry seasons and challenges come, your roots will deepen because they are thirsty for Christ because that is what we are to rely on is Christ. If you never faced seasons and challenges that push you out of your comfort zone, you would never develop roots nor would you go deeper. If everything was found on a surface level, you would never have the need to go deeper thus meaning we wouldn’t ever have to step out and truly put your trust in God. The deeper your roots go in Christ, the less you have to trust in your flesh because you cannot develop deeper roots while also still trusting yourself rather than God. You cannot have two foundations. Ask yourself are your roots in Christ or in your flesh?
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
– Matthew 6:24.
Those who have placed their trust in Christ and have rooted themselves in Him are as the tree described in Psalms.
“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”
– Psalms 1:3.
So overall, being rooted in Him hooks you into the foundation of Christ our rock and refuge. Without roots, we wouldn’t be able to stand for Christ without being burnt and plucked. Just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were able to stand in the fire, you will be able to stand through the fires, storms, droughts, and whatever tries to come against you and not be harmed. Deep roots are developed not through the comfort zone, but by seeking God even in the most challenging seasons.
