What is God's River?

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” – Psalms 1:1-3.

What is God’s river, and why is it so impactful in your walk with God? In the verses above, it talks about the one who meditates on God’s Word and obeys it shall be like one planted by a river who thrives and is prosperous. It is very interesting that in the middle of a desert, you can see amazing and lush vegetation always by a river even when the rest of the terrain is solid dry desert. The reason this happens is because rivers are a source of water which is key to having lush vegetation, but rivers also carry nutrients and minerals in its water as it flows. As these settle along the soil, the soil becomes extremely rich and abundant with vital nutrients. In the same manner, if you simply abide by God’s river, He will supply you with His living water and His nutrients so that you may be healthy and strong in your walk with Him.

“You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide their grain, for so you have prepared it. You water its ridges abundantly, you settle its furrows; you make it soft with showers, you bless its growth.” – Psalms 65:9-10.

One key point these two verses talk about is how God enriches the soil and softens it. If your heart is the soil by the river, then simply abiding by God’s river is how He will enrich it so fruits will produce, and soften it so your heart won’t be hardened. So, how does one abide by God’s river so that they may be like a flourishing tree with rich soil? It is as simple as seeking His heart and keeping a strong relationship with Him. Back in the first three verses of Psalms, it talks about how the blessed one behaves on a daily basis. From avoiding ungodly things and ungodly counsel to delighting in God’s Word and God’s own heart, that is how everyone should walk on their journey with God because that is how you abide by God’s river. So overall, God’s river is flowing with living water full of nutrients to your spirit man. Abiding by His river will supply you with all you need to be prosperous and rich in heart. Without His river, you would be like the dry and hardened desert of the world. God’s river is your lifeline because God’s river is where you dwell in relationship with Him.
